Scholarship Search Tips

1. Start early! Finding scholarships takes time and effort.

2. Check with your parent's employer(and your's) for scholarships offerd only to family members of employees. These are not often advertised elsewhere.`

3. Check with any clubs or organizations you and/ or your parents/grandparents belong to-once again, they may have member specific opportunities.

4. Read the fine print for application qualifications- for some scholarships you may NOT need to be a member of the offering organization.

5. Brainstorm about any unique talents or hobbies you may have and do an internet search for information about scholarships in those areas.

6. Specific career goals ( such as teaching, construction, accounting, health care...) may also lead to a scholarship oppurtunities.

7. Remember that the definition of financial need is variable. Some organizations will include money needed for travel to and from school, a computer and other items in their calculations.

8. The specific college you want to attend is always the best sources of information.

Scholarship Application Tips

1. Be organized! Keep a calender with deadlines and a checklist of things to do for each scholarship (recommendations, sending tesr scores essay, ect)

2. Follow directions excatly- for example your essay should conform specified number of words.

3. Meet deadlines! pay attention to postmark versus received deadlines.

4. Keep copies of anything you submit-just in case.

Career planning and resources are important through middle and high school and we encourage all of our students to use information and expertise available in the College Center and from their school counselor.

Deadlines 2012-13:

  • Scholarship: SCCC Achieve Scholarship ($500.00) -  Any student graduating from an Archuleta, Dolores, La Plata, Montezuma or San Juan County Colorado High School in 2013, who chooses to enroll at either of Southwest Colorado Community College campuses in Mancos or Durango for Fall of 2013.
  • Journalism Competitiion $1500 Healthy and Sustainable Schools
  • Scholarship for student athletes:  The NIAAA started a Scholar Athlete program in which it honors one male and one female from each section of the US, as well as an overall male and female student athlete from the 50 states.

  • Empire Electric Association, INC., Scholarship: $1000 for accredited, two-year community colleges or for four-year college/university programs, or $500 for Vocational or Technical Schools that require less than two years to completed the course work. Deadline: Feb 15, 2013. Please see Ms. Read for an application.
  • From AES Engineers: The consulting firm of AES Engineers is committed to continuing its support of higher education by providing scholarships to deserving students.
    To be eligible the student needs to answer one of the essay questions that they will find on our site at http://www.aesengineers.com/scholarships.htm
    Our belief is that achieving a high grade point average should not be the only criteria for determining who deserves to be helped. For that reason we are offering a scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by evaluating the essays that are submitted.

    Leonard Cain Medical Scholarship Fund
    This scholarship awards $500 scholarships for students from high schools in Montezuma and Dolores

    The Knights Memorial Scholarship Fund
    This memorial scholarship provides and annual $1,000 scholarship for post-secondary education. This scholarship is available for students
    from Dolores High School, Dove Creek High School, Mancos High School, Montezuma-Cortez High School, and Southwest Open School.

    The Bill & Peg Rees Scholarship Fund
    This is an annual, renewable scholarship ($1,000 to $2,000 annually) for goal-oriented students for post-secondary education. This
    scholarship is available for students from Dolores High School, Dove Creek High School, Mancos High School, Montezuma-Cortez High
    School, and Southwest Open School.

    The following scholarships are available from Ft. Lewis College. Students applying for these scholarships, must attend Ft. Lewis. These
    scholarshps can be found at www.fortlewis.edu/financialaid/Scholarships

    Colorado resident with financial need
    Any major is accepted. No limited GPA
    Essay must include accomplishments, goals, interests and reason for need
    Award is renewable but student must reapply each year

    3.0 cumulative high school or college GPA
    Resident of (in order of preference) Durango, La Plata County, Southwest CO, CO
    Enrolled in major leading to any medical field
    Up to $500

    3.0 FLC cumulative GPA (applicants with less than 12 credit hours will provide high school GPA)
    CO resident
    Major in business or related field
    Must complete 15 credit hours for each of the two terms the scholarship is held
    Up to $200

    3.2 cumulative GPA, must be maintained
    La Plata or Montezuma County resident
    Renewable for up to four years
    Up to $5,000
    2.5 GPA or higher
    Increase and maintain GPA to a 3.0 during the sophomore, junior and senior years and carry at least 15 credit hours per term
    Resident of La Plata, Archuleta, or San Juan Counties, CO
    Must have strong financial need and complete a FAFSA
    Must be a first generation college student-neither parent having ever attended college
    Must declare a major by junior year, preference given to agriculture or environmental majors.
    Must have a ranching or farming background
    Need no less than three recommendations explaining recipient’s interest in college and qualities to succeed
    Recipient need not reapply after freshman year, but must provide update of personal information and academic transcripts yearly
    Essay to include information describing parents support of you or lack thereof, how much financial aid requested and justification, why a
    college degree is important to you and how you will finance your college education if no financial aid is received

    Four year scholarship to cover tuition, fees, books, room and board (may cover one extra term of continuous academia study excluding
    summer)amount varies

    Empire Electric Scholarships for vocational school, 2 yr or 4 yr programs can be found at www.eea.coop. These scholarship deadlines are
    February 15, 2013.

    American legion Scholarships:
    Several Scholarships can be found on the American Legion site at www.legion.org/scholarships.

    Elks Foundation Scholarships:
    The following scholarships can be found on the site http://www.elks.org/enf/scholars/
    Most Valuable Student Scholarships500 four-year scholarships, ranging from $1,000 per year to $15,000 per year, for graduating high
    school seniors based on financial need, leadership and scholarship.

    Legacy Awards$4,000 ($1,000 year for four years) merit-based scholarships for children and grandchildren of Elks who are members in
    good standing.
    Emergency Educational GrantsOne-year educational grants available to children of deceased or totally disabled Elks.
    CHS Foundation Scholarships.The CHS foundation offers many scholarships and grants for use at Colorado State University and at many

  • “B.   • BigSun Scholarship
    The BigSun Organization is proud to be able to continue to help young athletes succeed in their academic pursuits. We are offering an annual scholarship to a deserving student. All student athletes are eligible for this award, regardless of which sport they are participating in.
    Deadline        -  June 21, 2013

    The successful applicant will be a high school senior or be attending a post secondary institute and currently involved in some sport at that institution or in the community..

  • The Cortez Elks Lodge 1789 Student Scholarship Contest.
